The song is about growing old and losing certain feelings I think. Like adulthood forces you to be a colder person because you're experienced and things just don't touch you as deeply. The kind of fascination that gets lost with knowledge/experiences because you know too much to keep yourself in that state of amazement for things/life.

Thanks for writing this Descent

I agree wholeheartedly. This is one of my greatest worries

Oh well, that could be.
Anyway I really don't care.
I care of what they mean for me and for the people here.

Descent: thanks so much. You always tell something so true.

I completely agree with you descent!
and to me this meaning comes not only from "running out of time", but much more from the line "and never sleep for wanting hours, the empty hours of greed". his "greed" is for something that he had, but now is finished: the happiness and lightness of youth. infact he has "uselessly always the need to feel again the real belief of something more than mockery" and after all he simply yearns to "fill" is heart with love but he can't...
what I don't understand in this song is the music related to the words: listening only to the music of "Closedown" it always makes me think about an epic quietness instead of desperation... and those words talk about desperation... mah!

Hi, so good to see that others appreciate this song as much a me. When I hear it, no matter where I am, I go into a kind of "Closedown-world". The way I see and interpret this song is like.. I see him lying on a hotel bed, missing his wife, his life and contemplating the need to entertain and share his art with people, and yet wanting to be in that safe and familiar place he calls home. The tiredness, the ache, the selfawareness.. simple lyrics combined with amazing! music. It rolls and pulls and lures and drags you into this wave of sad, sad beauty. I love my "Closedown-world". Thank you, Robert and The Cure!
