Ha! That's really weird that you said that, love_cat, because I was thinking about that today. I recently read "Never Enough: The Story of the Cure" (great, great read!) and it talked about how RS tripped on acid a lot around the time of Disintegration. When I was running today I was thinking how weird it would be if Closedown were about drugs, even though I don't think that's what it's actually about. RS is a smart man - so much thought can be put into interpreting his songs.

The most important point for me in this song is not the content but the very explicit split of self.
One watches, one acts.
Every writer knows it happens for real.

I think a lot of us (myself included) interpret the song as having an obvious sexual meaning because it is such a downright sexy song!!!
I mean, at the risk of too much information, I had one of my most intense sexual experiences ever while listening to this song, and I reckon I am probably not alone! There may also have been mind altering substances involved. But enough about that...

However the whole third person thing, and the guilt, could be so many things...but that is what I love about The Cure and the way Robert writes. The music on it's own can conjure up such a precise image, then you listen to the words and it changes...and everytime you listen to it the image changes. And when you hear it live, it changes again...amazing really!!!

I have never heard the song with the image in my mind of him having sex with someone.

I always thought it was about being addicted to something that does'nt imperative has to be a drug (like LSD and so on). Maybe it's more about a habit that he has and actually hates, but he is unable to let go of the behaviour he's used to. That leads to some kind of depression, and while he's trying to fight the need to do -whatever it is- again, he watches himself fall. Into the addiction.

Hm... Just random thoughts. I need to hear it again now and force myself to NOT see him having sex with a woman. *cough*
